When I was a kid, I remember my mom and my aunt traveling the dusty gravel road between our farm houses for their daily morning ritual, a cup of coffee. My mom would go there or my aunt would come to our house and they’d always have coffee in their favorite cups while they chatted. That ritual continued their entire lives.

I could never understand this ritual and wondered, what is so great about coffee? Now, 50 years later, I am wondering what the heck took me so long to learn to love coffee?

Moving to a new community and not knowing anyone, I decided to start an exercise class. That led to joining a weekly yoga class and this group of exceptionally limber ladies love their coffee!

Once a week, they’d meet at their local coffee shop for a cup of Joe. I started joining them and felt a little silly ordering a Diet Coke. So, I forced myself to drink coffee and I’ve loved it ever since!

So, what’s in a cup? Yes, it’s great-tasting coffee from a local coffee shop but more than that, it’s the conversation, camaraderie and friendships I’ve made along the way – all over a simple cup of coffee. And, that misunderstood ritual from so many years ago has now become mine. You’re never too old to try something new and get outside your comfort zone – even if it takes a solid 56 years to do it!
